Charlotte Jane Memorial Park Cemetery holds a iron fence and a thick canopy of oaks that shield the white marble headstones from the glare of the Miami sun. This four acre plot serves as the final resting place for many of the original Bahamian settlers who built Coconut Grove in the late nineteenth century. When the city moved to clear gravesites elsewhere to make room for expansion, the community fought for this land to keep their ancestors together in their own soil.
