The Plymouth Congregational Church features a facade built from rough-hewn oolitic limestone, held together by hand-mixed mortar that retains the marks of the workers from the nineteen thirties. This structure grew from the vision of Reverend H.J. Hatcher, who arrived in Coconut Grove in eighteen ninety-seven to establish a place for worship. He insisted on construction methods that mirrored the older missions of the Spanish Caribbean, requiring his congregation to labor directly on the walls with their own hands.
