The Barnacle is a home built by Ralph Middleton Munroe in eighteen ninety-one, easily identified by its broad, sloping roof and its position tucked among the tropical hammock trees. Munroe designed the house to catch the prevailing breezes off Biscayne Bay, using high ceilings and wide porches to combat the Florida heat before electricity arrived. He lived here for forty-two years, navigating the coastal waters and watching Coconut Grove grow from a rugged pioneer settlement into the neighborhood it is today.
