Mariah Brown House

The Mariah Brown House features a simple wood frame and a corrugated metal roof, marking it as one of the oldest residences in Coconut Grove. Mariah Brown arrived in Florida from the Bahamas in the late nineteenth century to work as a cook for the early settlers. She eventually purchased this plot and built her home using salvaged lumber from shipwrecks. It served as a boarding house for laborers helping to develop the area, housing them long before the city’s official incorporation.
