The Art Deco terra-cotta facade of the Chicago Motor Club building features an oversized, stylized map of the United States. When the building opened in nineteen twenty-eight, this map acted as a billboard for the club members who drove their own vehicles into the city. Architect Howard Van Doren Shaw designed the lobby to accommodate a constant stream of motorists needing travel advice. Today, the interior serves as a hotel, but the map remains embedded in the limestone and terra-cotta exterior.
