Marquette Building

The Marquette Building rises twelve stories in a grid of dark, rust-colored steel and terra cotta. It was one of the first steel-frame skyscrapers in Chicago, built in eighteen ninety-four. Inside the lobby, a massive glass mosaic by Louis Comfort Tiffany depicts the journey of Father Marquette, the French explorer who paddled down the Mississippi River. That mosaic serves as a grand entrance for a building that held offices for the city's early engineers and architects.
