Inland Steel Building

The Inland Steel Building shines with a stainless steel skin that reflects the surrounding skyscrapers. Completed in nineteen fifty-eight, it was the first skyscraper built in the Chicago Loop in over twenty years. Architects Skidmore, Owings and Merrill moved the structural columns outside the main office space, leaving the interior floors entirely open and free of pillars. When the steel company’s executives first moved in, they replaced their private, enclosed offices with glass walls to match the building’s transparency.
