The Mergenthaler Linotype Building stands out with its heavy terra cotta detailing and the deep-set, arched windows that line its facade. Built in nineteen thirteen, this structure served as the regional headquarters for the company that perfected the hot-metal typesetting machine. Ottmar Mergenthaler changed the entire pace of the newspaper industry, turning what took hours of manual labor into a mechanical process. His machines hummed inside these walls, casting lines of lead type for presses across the Midwest.
