Tribune Tower

The Tribune Tower rises with a jagged crown of limestone flying buttresses modeled after the thirteenth century butter tower of the Rouen Cathedral in France. In nineteen twenty-two, the Chicago Tribune launched an international competition for the most beautiful building in the world, attracting hundreds of entries from architects in twenty-three countries. The winning design promised a neo-Gothic skyscraper, and the company embedded fragments of stone and brick from the Parthenon, the Taj Mahal, and the Berlin Wall into the base.
