1 N. LaSalle Building

The one North LaSalle building rises forty-nine stories in a tapered silhouette of white terra cotta. Completed in nineteen thirty, it occupies the former site of the Tacoma Building, the world’s first skyscraper to use a complete steel frame. When the old building was torn down, architect K. Welch Kellogg replaced it with a structure that defied the economic collapse of the Great Depression. Its lobby features ornate bronze bas-reliefs depicting the history of LaSalle Street, celebrating the city's financial ambition.
