North Wabash Avenue & East Lake Street

other

The intersection of North Wabash Avenue and East Lake Street sits directly beneath the massive, rust-colored steel girders of the Chicago Union Loop. This track structure carries the elevated trains, casting the street level into a permanent, clattering shadow. In eighteen ninety-seven, this corner became the final link in the transit circuit that defined the downtown area. When the tracks closed the gap here, they locked the heart of the city into the rigid, rectangular shape that remains today.
