Tufts Memorial Steps

The Tufts Memorial Steps rise as a wide, granite staircase carved directly into the steep slope of Walnut Hill. These stairs connect the campus below to the domed library building at the summit. In nineteen twenty-three, the university dedicated them to the men of Tufts who died in the First World War. Architect Arthur Shurcliff designed the path to echo the formal landscape traditions of his time, intentionally forcing a slow, deliberate climb toward the crest of the hill.
