Charles Tufts donated the land for this university in eighteen fifty-two when the hill was nothing but a rocky, abandoned pasture known as Walnut Hill. He famously remarked that he wanted to put a light on that hill. The campus remains anchored by the original Ballou Hall, its brick facade standing at the highest point of the property. Today, the university continues the tradition of balancing rigorous academic research with the small, hillside scale that defined its earliest years in Medford.
