James A. Burden House

historic

The James A. Burden House was commissioned as a wedding present in 1901 for Florence Adele Sloane and James A. Burden Jr. The couple, both heirs to massive American industrial fortunes, received the home as a gift from the bride's father. The building was designed by the architectural firm Warren and Wetmore, the same group behind the creation of Grand Central Terminal. Completed in 1905, the mansion was intended to serve as a stage for the lavish social life common among the Gilded Age elite.
