Art in General stands as a significant part of the creative history of this neighborhood. Founded in 1981 by artists Martin Weinstein and Teresa Liszka, it earned its name from the building where it was originally housed, the General Hardware building at 79 Walker Street. For decades, this site served as a vital platform for emerging artists, providing a dedicated space for those whose work often fell outside the scope of traditional galleries and major museums. The organization occupied this location at the intersection of Chinatown, Tribeca, and SoHo until 2015. During its long tenure, it acted as an alternative space that facilitated residencies and major new commissions, allowing artists to experiment with media ranging from performance and video to large-scale installations. By offering both resources and physical space to creators early in their careers, the institution became a cornerstone for experimental art in the city.
