Rockwood Chocolate Factory Historic District

The massive red brick buildings you see now once housed the second-largest chocolate producer in the United States, rivaled only by Hershey. Rockwood and Company arrived in this industrial corner of Brooklyn in 1904, eventually expanding to occupy nearly an entire city block. Their facility was a powerhouse of manufacturing, processing raw cocoa beans into everything from cocoa powder and baking chocolate to the snack bars that became staples in pantries across the country.
