This park is named for Hugh McLaughlin Junior, a man who dominated Brooklyn politics for nearly half a century. Known as the Sage of Willoughby Street, he began his working life as a simple fishmonger before rising to become a powerful local civic leader. He held significant sway over the religious and political life of the borough, often using his influence to support the city's working-class citizens.
