Equitable Life Building (Manhattan)

The original building that stood on this block in eighteen seventy became the first office structure in the world to feature passenger elevators. Before its arrival, prestigious companies refused to lease office space above the second floor because climbing multiple flights of stairs exhausted their employees. These early vertical steam cars changed commercial architecture forever by proving that upper floors could be just as valuable as the ground level.
