Trinity Church occupies a site that has been at the center of New York City for over three centuries. The original church building was completed in 1698 and stood on the same ground where you are standing now. That first structure was quite different from the one you see today, as it faced west toward the Hudson River rather than down Wall Street. Legend claims that the notorious pirate Captain William Kidd provided the ropes and tackle from his own ship to help hoist the stones for its construction.
