Duke Ellington Statue

The monument standing before you at the corner of 110th Street and Fifth Avenue holds a distinct place in the history of New York City public art. Dedicated in 1997, it became the first monument in the city specifically created to honor an African American. The project began nearly two decades earlier when jazz pianist Bobby Short launched a private fundraising campaign to ensure the legendary composer received a permanent tribute in the neighborhood he called home.
