Gutenberg Playground

Gutenberg Playground takes its name from Johann Gutenberg, the fifteenth century German pioneer who introduced movable type printing to Europe. This naming choice is a direct nod to the adjacent High School for Graphic Communication Arts, an institution founded in 1925 to train students for professional careers in the printing industry. When the school moved into its current seven story facility in 1958, this playground opened alongside it to serve the school and the surrounding community. The site maintains this historical connection to the printing trades by sitting in the footprint of what was once a midtown district synonymous with the city's publishing and press production.
