United States Post Office (Madison Square Station)

The United States Post Office at Madison Square Station is a striking example of nineteen thirties design, yet its name is a bit of a geographic trick. Despite being called Madison Square Station, the building does not sit on the park itself. It is located about three blocks east on East Twenty-third Street, tucked between Lexington and Third Avenues. When it opened in 1937, it was designed to solve the problem of inadequate local facilities by creating a structure built exclusively for postal operations, replacing an older branch that had occupied a smaller, crowded space nearby.
