Former Home of Andy Warhol

Andy Warhol purchased this five-story townhouse at fifty-seven East Sixty-Sixth Street in January of nineteen seventy-four for three hundred and ten thousand dollars. He moved here because his previous residence had become completely overwhelmed by his massive, ever-growing collection of art and objects. The property had been built at the turn of the twentieth century in a restrained Neo-Georgian style, a stark contrast to the more ornate designs popular in earlier decades on the Upper East Side. Despite its grand appearance, the house required immediate attention after he moved in due to persistent problems with its original plumbing and an unreliable elevator.
