Met Breuer

The building you are approaching is a masterwork of twentieth-century architecture that was intentionally designed to provoke. When it opened in 1966 as the original home of the Whitney Museum of American Art, the architect Marcel Breuer fulfilled a brief that demanded the structure be both monumental and controversial. He achieved this by creating an upside-down ziggurat, a bold, inverted pyramid that hangs over the sidewalk and commands the corner of Madison Avenue and 75th Street. The façade is wrapped in over fourteen hundred slabs of grey granite and is almost entirely devoid of windows, relying on interior lighting to create a focused, contemplative atmosphere for art.
