Little Island

You are approaching a structure that seems to float above the Hudson River like a collection of concrete lilies. This park, known as Little Island, rests on one hundred and thirty-two individual concrete columns called tulips. These supports vary in height, creating an undulating landscape that rises and falls to provide different vantage points of the river and the city skyline. The design intentionally transforms the utilitarian nature of a pier into a sculpted, organic-looking garden. By elevating the entire park, the architects created a space that feels detached from the dense urban grid of Manhattan, offering a literal and emotional escape as you walk onto the pier.
