Belasco Theatre

The Belasco Theatre was built in nineteen hundred and seven as the Stuyvesant Theatre by the legendary impresario David Belasco. He was a pioneer of the Little Theater movement, which sought to strip away the grand, cavernous scale of typical playhouses in favor of intimacy. Belasco worked closely with architect George Keister to design an auditorium that felt more like a cozy living room than a public stage, ensuring the audience sat close enough to the actors to feel the intensity of every performance. He even equipped the building with state of the art lighting rigs and hydraulics to achieve his signature realistic and moody stage effects.
