The Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre began its life in nineteen seventeen as the Plymouth Theatre, debuting as the very first independent commission for the architect Herbert Krapp. Krapp was a pivotal figure who would go on to design dozens of Broadway venues, and he launched his career here by creating a space specifically for the powerful Shubert brothers. He designed this building to stand as a deliberate pair with the neighboring Broadhurst Theatre, linking their architectural footprints together on the same block.
