Liberty Theatre

The Liberty Theatre opened in nineteen oh four with a deliberate obsession with American iconography. Its architects, Herts and Tallant, designed a neoclassical facade on forty second street featuring four story tall caryatids flanking the entrance. Above the main arch, a large stone relief of the Liberty Bell looked down at the sidewalk, while a massive stone eagle with its wings spread wide stood at the very summit of the building. Inside, this patriotic theme continued throughout the auditorium, where gilded Liberty Bells and eagles circled the ceiling dome and the proscenium arch.
