Shubert Theatre

The Shubert Theatre was constructed in 1913 as a memorial to Sam S. Shubert, who had died eight years earlier in a tragic railroad accident at the age of twenty-six. His surviving brothers, Lee and J. J. Shubert, built this playhouse to serve as the headquarters for their growing theatrical empire, placing their corporate offices on the top floor of the building. To ensure easy access to their business interests, they supposedly installed a private elevator that ran directly from the basement dressing rooms up to a penthouse apartment, allowing Lee Shubert to move freely between his professional and private quarters.
