It was the ambitious project of boxing promoter Tex Rickard, who pushed to finish the massive structure in just under one year. To secure the four point seven five million dollars required for construction, he persuaded a group of wealthy backers to fund the venture, calling them his six hundred millionaires. The location itself replaced what were once city trolley car barns, transforming a utilitarian industrial site into the center of New York City's sporting life.
