Stephen Sondheim Theatre

The Stephen Sondheim Theatre is one of the few subterranean houses on Broadway. When the building was reconstructed between 2004 and 2009, architects had to excavate seventy feet below street level to fit the new auditorium within the footprint of the existing site. This massive engineering effort was required because the project was legally bound to preserve the original neo-classical facade from 1918, which stands as a protected city landmark.
