Barclay–Vesey Building

The Barclay Vesey Building stands as one of the world's first true Art Deco skyscrapers. Completed in 1927, it broke away from the traditional, ornate styles of the past to embrace a new, modern form. Architect Ralph Walker intentionally gave the building a massive, imposing silhouette, with vertical piers that act like stone buttresses to support its weight. This design was so revolutionary at the time that contemporary critics struggled to categorize it, often labeling the look as modernistic or modern perpendicular.
