Washington Market Park

Washington Market Park exists because local residents turned a municipal dump into a public space. In the late nineteen seventies, the city intended to pave this site for a parking lot, but neighborhood activists occupied the area with shovels and rakes to clear away debris themselves. Their successful protest forced the city to scrap the asphalt plans and instead fund the construction of a permanent community park.
