The Apthorp

The Apthorp takes up an entire city block, creating a private, palace-like atmosphere in the middle of the Upper West Side. When it was completed in 1908, it stood as the largest and most ambitious apartment building in New York City. Its design, inspired by the grand palazzos of Florence, centers around a lush, landscaped courtyard that is hidden behind massive wrought-iron gates. If you look closely at those gates, you will see they are decorated with a pair of gilded gazelle heads. Above the main entrance, you can also spot large limestone sculptures that represent the four seasons. These details reflect the building's original intent to offer wealthy New Yorkers a luxurious alternative to the private townhouses that defined the Gilded Age.
