The Vismarkt, or Fish Market, stands out for its long row of white stone columns topped by a simple, sturdy roof. Built in eighteen twenty-one, this open-air space replaced a riverfront market that officials deemed a public health hazard. Local fishmongers hauled their daily catches here, arranging them on marble slabs to keep the product cool. When cholera swept through the city in the nineteenth century, the market became a center of local trade, anchored by the stone architecture that remains today.
