Sashuis

The Sashuis, or Sluice House, sits directly over the water with its distinct stepped gable and heavy stone arches spanning the canal. Built in the sixteenth century, this structure controlled the flow of water between the city and the Zwin inlet, regulating the water levels for trade ships. In nineteen oh two, a city engineer named Karel Verschelde oversaw a major restoration, scraping away layers of history to expose the original brickwork and medieval foundation that keep this house anchored in the current.
