Market Square

The Grote Markt in Bruges is dominated by the tall, brick Belfry tower that leans slightly to the east. For centuries, this square served as the city’s primary commercial engine, where merchants from across Europe exchanged goods like wool and lace. In thirteen oh four, the Flemish army gathered here before marching to defeat French knights at the Battle of the Golden Spurs. Today, the square remains the center of civic life, defined by its stepped-gable houses and the constant rhythm of horse-drawn carriages.
