Sint-Salvatorskathedraal

The Sint-Salvatorskathedraal rises above the rest of Bruges with a massive, fortress-like brick tower that dwarfs the neighboring rooftops. While its heavy base dates to the twelfth century, the top section was added later to compete with the height of a nearby church. Inside, the walls hold a collection of Flemish primitives and ornate tapestries that were saved when the building narrowly avoided destruction during the French Revolution. A stray fire damaged the roof in eighteen thirty-nine, requiring a major reconstruction effort.
