Volkskundemuseum

The Volkskundemuseum occupies a row of seven small, whitewashed almshouses along the Balstraat. These houses date back to the late fourteenth century and once provided shelter for elderly or indigent members of the local guilds. In the nineteen sixties, the city converted the complex into a museum dedicated to everyday Flemish life. Inside, you will find reconstructed workshops of a cobbler, a baker, and a candlemaker, along with a recreated traditional schoolroom where children practiced calligraphy with ink and quill.
