Wijngaardplein

viewpoint

The Wijngaardplein is a modest, triangular space defined by the heavy, whitewashed gatehouse that serves as the entrance to the Begijnhof. While the square serves as a quiet transition point for visitors today, it was once the site of a busy cattle market where local farmers gathered to sell livestock. A small, bronze statue of Minnewater, the lady of the lake from a local legend, sits near the water, marking the spot where the old city walls once stood guard over the canal.
