Toronto Necropolis

The Toronto Necropolis features a wrought iron gatehouse with a sharp, pointed spire that rises above the cemetery walls. This Victorian burying ground opened in eighteen fifty after the city's original potter's field became overcrowded. William Lyon Mackenzie, the first mayor of Toronto and a leader of the eighteen thirty-seven rebellion, rests here under a plain monument. His grave serves as a reminder of his long, turbulent career fighting against the local political establishment that once excluded him from public office.
