The intersection of Church and Wellesley features a corner building marked by two large, vibrant signs, one spelling out Woody’s and the other SAILOR. This spot began as a neighborhood tavern in the nineteen eighties, long before this area became the city’s primary destination for the LGBTQ community. Back then, the owners pushed back against aggressive police raids by refusing to close their doors, keeping the lights on and the music playing while officers marched through the front entrance to search the patrons.
