The Wellesley Cottages are defined by their deep, steeply pitched gables and distinct gingerbread woodwork, which look out of place among the typical Victorian row houses of Cabbagetown. These narrow homes were built in eighteen eighty-seven to provide affordable housing for the laborers working at the nearby sprawling industrial plants. A businessman named John Flett funded the construction, hoping to attract workers who could pay steady rent. He squeezed twelve homes onto this small parcel of land, forcing the architect into an unusually vertical design.
