Riverdale Farm

The tall, red brick barn sits at the heart of Riverdale Farm, surrounded by split-rail fences and winding dirt paths. This three-acre site recreates the operation of a nineteenth-century Ontario homestead within the city limits. Before the animals arrived, the grounds functioned as the Riverdale Zoo, which held bears and wolves in iron cages until nineteen seventy-four. When the city moved the larger animals to the Toronto Zoo, local residents lobbied to keep the land as a working farm for public enjoyment.
