Spruce Court Co-Op

Spruce Court occupies a full city block, defined by its rows of two-story, red-brick buildings organized around a central, shared courtyard. Built in nineteen thirteen, the complex provided high-quality housing for working-class families when Cabbagetown was crowded and neglected. Residents once used a communal laundry room and drying yard, while the open green space served as a playground. A decade after the doors opened, the board of directors famously evicted a resident for keeping a cow in the basement.
