The glass-vaulted ceiling of the Eaton Centre rises above the shopping levels, mimicking the design of the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele Two in Milan. When the centre opened in nineteen seventy-seven, developers demolished a web of historic streets and smaller shops to clear the site. Eaton’s department store, which anchored the complex, had dominated Canadian retail for decades. Today, a flock of fiberglass geese hangs suspended from that arched roof, a permanent art installation by Michael Snow that captures a frozen moment of flight.
