Toronto Dominion Centre

The Toronto Dominion Centre is a collection of six black steel and glass towers that sit flush against the sidewalk, defined by their sharp, boxy silhouettes and thin gold-tinted windows. When the first tower opened in nineteen sixty-seven, it stripped away the traditional stone facades common to the city's banking district. Architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe designed the complex to frame the cityscape through these massive, dark monoliths. He refused to include a clock on the exterior, arguing that banks should not tell time.
