Harbourfront Centre

The Harbourfront Centre is a ten-acre site on the edge of Lake Ontario dominated by a cluster of low-slung, industrial-style buildings linked by outdoor boardwalks. It began in nineteen seventy-two when the federal government seized the abandoned shipping terminals to prevent private condo developers from walling off the water. The project faced immediate backlash from locals who demanded public access. Today, the complex functions as a non-profit cultural institution, filling its concrete galleries and theaters with music, craft, and dance festivals.
