Victoria Memorial Square

Victoria Memorial Square holds a cluster of old, white marble tombstones that lean at uneven angles under the mature trees. It occupies the site of the original Military Burying Ground, established in seventeen ninety-three for the garrison at Fort York. When the city expanded, the headstones were cleared away and stacked in the center to create a park. A local resident named John George Howard eventually donated his own property to expand the space, marking the beginning of its public life.
