Toronto City Hall

Two curved concrete towers wrap around a saucer-shaped council chamber, making Toronto City Hall look like an abandoned spaceship from the nineteen sixties. Architect Viljo Revell won an international competition for the design, beating out over five hundred other entries. Before this building opened in nineteen sixty-five, city government operated out of the nearby Old City Hall, a rigid stone building that eventually ran out of space. Officials wanted this new structure to feel open, democratic, and distinctly modern for the growing city.
